This weekend I learned that an accounting graduate I recently mentored has accepted an offer for a training contract at a local firm. I am over the proverbial moon. Here’s why.
As a retiree I have a lifetime’s experience of what works and what doesn’t. Regardless of the so-called skills shortage, the future depends on apprenticed experts. Accounting is one of the few professions that offers this opportunity.
The fact that someone has attained a degree in accounting is not enough to gain a training contract. Gaining a position is about much more than technical ability. It’s about personality, fit to the firm’s way of doing business and so much more. But there are ways to get through the interview door and that’s where I helped.
In this case I only discovered that the lady was looking for a post at a time when I didn’t know whether my firm of accountants was taking on trainees.
A couple of emails later and the lady was on the hook. I helped her write a credible CV that could get her through the door and have talking points at interview. Done well, interviewing works both ways.
It worked.
So today, I’m incredibly happy.
I’m sure this lady will do well. She’s smart, humble and willing to learn. But at the same time I’m mindful how hard it is to be a learner in a profession that isn’t always appreciated as requiring considerable mental and personal skill.
At the same time, I’m grateful to my practice partner who took my email and put her into the mix. Let’s hope it works out over the next few years.
In the meantime - I’m stoked.
Thanks for sharing this story Den. Resonated with me.
